A recent Bloomberg article tells us that millennial males are disappearing from work at rates we wouldn’t expect based off historical statistics. For example, according to calculations made by the writer for this blog post, male millennials had a decrease of workforce participation during 2017-2018 than any other group tracked.

On the other hand, there are many people who want to work in sales but can’t find jobs. The turnover rate for positions is incredibly high because companies have trouble filling their workforce and seeing massive churn from SDRs to Sales Executives.

Millennials are driven by the purpose of their work. They want to know why they do what they do, and how it impacts others. Millennials are looking for more than just a paycheck. They want to help others and make an impact, which is something that good salespeople do.

If there is a vocation that fosters independence, it is most likely sales. Many sales teams, particularly outside and field sales, lack formal office requirements, which provides the sales profession with significant scheduling freedom and flexibility.

If you’re a millennial man who wants to join the workforce, these tips will help guide your decision and give you reasons to work in sales.

1. Show you have a purpose aligned with the business

Your prospective employer will want to know that you will be motivated to work each day. Demonstrate that your objectives correspond with theirs.

2. Show the ability to learn new things

When I interview, I look for candidates who are willing to learn and grow. The workforce is changing. More and more companies are focusing on new skills rather than old ones.

3. Show you can communicate

Communication and emotion are becoming more important in today’s world. For the right job, it is necessary to show that you can connect even through text messages.

4. Show you’ll value your supervisor

Show your supervisor that you value them. If something important isn’t getting done, let them know and offer to help.

Your future boss wants to be respected and valued. If you do that, they will love you.

5. Show don’t tell

Every one of these tips starts with “show” not “tell.” This is for a reason. Prove what you can do, don’t just tell them.

1. Build your network

Networking with people is a very good way to find jobs. You can meet many people and then connect the dots of what you want in your next job.

2. Have a conversation with employers without “hitting on them”

Make sure you don’t come across as desperate when having a conversation with employers.

When you interview with a company, be interested in what they do and who their customers are. This will make it easier for the employer to get excited about hiring you. If you ask the right questions, you might even get an offer for your dream job.

3. Keep building and showing your skills

I’ve found that you have to keep building your skills and always show them. As the world of work is changing, we need to be prepared and continue developing our skills. Opportunities will come if you’re ready when they do.
